About Me

I’ve always painted from being a child, and always the natural world.

On leaving school I was encouraged to teach, and I did enjoy working with children, but I still wanted to paint. When the opportunity came for me to study for my degree in Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University I took it joyfully, and gained B.A Hons. in Fine Art, Painting and Printmaking.

I paint in oils on linen, canvas or panel, my work is drawn from my experience of landscape, of trees and water, time and light.

I’m always aware of the human history written on the landscape of the Peak District in hill, trees, water and stone. I feel a deep connection to the earth, everywhere around me has been changed, trodden on used by people over thousands of years. I find water in all its forms, fascinating, changing and changeless. Rivers, streams and canals reflecting use or misuse, but also revered.

In my work I want to express the feeling of a place, I begin by making sketches and sitting in observation and meditation. The depth of time expressed in the essence of a place, the atmosphere in light and shade and reflections on water.

In the studio I work intuitively, in layers. My painting becomes a meditation on an experience rather than an attempt to make a photographic image. I would like the viewer to be able to access that feeling of peace and deep connection, a timeless space in a busy life.
